It is my pleasure to provide you with a report highlighting some of the recent CACE activities.

Registration is now open for the 2018 Conference in Prince Edward Island. The Co-Chairs of the Conference (Chris Montigny, Karen Campbell and Murray Murphy), working with their planning committee and the Board of Directors, have put in a tremendous amount of work to develop an excellent conference program. Session Chairs are now diligently working with their presenters to ensure that panels and papers are of the high quality that CACE conference attendees have come to expect.

Early bird registration for the Conference closes on July 18, so you still have time to take advantage of that reduced registration fee.

In February of 2018 our then Treasurer and Saskatchewan Director, Meghan McCreary, was appointed to the Saskatchewan Court of Queen’s Bench. Meghan was a highly valued member of the Board and was in line to become the President of CACE in 2019-20. Although it is a loss for CACE, Meghan is a great addition to the judiciary and we thank her for her contributions to CACE over the years.

I am very pleased to report that Amy Tibble, Ontario Director, was appointed by the Board of Directors to replace Meghan as Treasurer.

On May 5 and 6, 2018 we held the second Future Leaders Conference (“FLC”) in Toronto, with approximately 70 members in attendance. The FLC is aimed at lawyers with 10 years of practice or less, with a view to engaging CACE members at that level of experience. Feedback from participants at this year’s event has been extremely positive. Congratulations and thanks to Lorenzo Lisi (FLC Committee Chair) and the FLC Committee and, of course, to Tracy Scanks for her usual superb conference execution.

In addition to assisting with the conference planning and general oversight of the organization, the Board of Directors worked on developing and adopting an updated Strategic Plan (2018-2020). It has more recently been working on updating CACE’s membership criteria and committee structures. A new Cannabis Committee was established, with Barb Johnston serving as Chair, to focus on the implications of the legalization of recreational use of cannabis. Each of the Privacy Committee (Jill Wilkie, Chair), Human Rights Committee (Marino Sveinson, Chair) and Occupational Health and Safety Committee (Jeremy Warning, Chair) have been actively carrying forward their mandates throughout the year, and the Advocacy Committee (Mark Crestohl, Chair) has continued its exemplary work in preparing submissions on behalf of CACE on a number of issues and identifying and assessing potential case interventions.

I wish you all a great summer and look forward to seeing you in Charlottetown!

CACE COMMITTEES

We would like to take this opportunity to encourage our members to join CACE’s Committees on Advocacy, Human Rights, Occupational Health & Safety and Privacy. The Committees meet either monthly or bi-monthly by conference call and are a great way to keep up to date in these areas! Though these Committees share relevant cases and high level information they are also a great way to keep juniors and corporate counsel in the loop of what is happening in these specialty areas of law. Joining a Committee is easy! Just email our Executive Director, Tracy Scanks, at tracy@proconadvantage.com and she will happy to add you to one or more of the Committees of interest.
