PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

- Jamie Knight, Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP, Hamilton, Ontario
2016-2017 CACE President

It is my pleasure as President to reach out to members and advise of all the exciting initiatives that the 2016-2017 Board of Directors have underway!  First, let me describe the big events.  Under the leadership of Craig Neuman and our Past-President Barb Johnston, we are busy putting together an outstanding Conference for Calgary.  Please mark your calendars for September 14 to 16, 2017.  Looking ahead, the 2018 Conference will be in Charlottetown.  As detailed below, we have introduced a Future Leaders Conference.

CACE is not just about Conferences.  We have active committees that operate throughout the year, tracking legal and policy developments and organizing webinars.  Our committees include Health and Safety, Human Rights, Privacy, and Advocacy.  We encourage interested members to get involved with a committee.  We would be pleased to provide further details – just email Tracy Scanks or me.  Stay tuned to the website (see more about our new website below) to learn about webinars and other developments.

Our Directors are responsible to organize provincial meetings and to engage in outreach to government, administrative tribunals and other third parties.  Please stay alert for news about meetings and developments in your province.

We have dramatically increased the involvement of in-house counsel in CACE.  Membership for in-house counsel is free – the only requirement is that you have labour and employment issues form a substantial part of your duties.  We are lucky to have two enthusiastic in-house Directors, Mark Crestohl and Veronica Kenny.  Please connect with them or with Tracy Scanks if you want to become more involved or if you know in-house counsel who would benefit from membership in CACE.  It is truly enriching for them and for the rest of us.

Advocacy has become a centrepiece for CACE.  When appropriate, we will seek to intervene in significant cases.  As important, we are a voice for our members and our clients in providing oral and written submissions to government and agencies in respect of legislative and policy developments.  We appreciate input from members about key cases and other developments and we rely on members to help us develop effective submissions.

I look forward to seeing you in Calgary.  If you have never been to a CACE Conference before, you should make it a priority to attend – it is the best CLE you will ever experience.  If you are a regular, we not only look forward to seeing you again, but we would welcome your participation throughout the year.  Never hesitate to contact Tracy Scanks or me and we will help get you more involved!

Inaugural CACE Future Leaders Conference

It is a priority of this year’s Board to reach out to laywers in their early years of practice.  As such, consistent with our mandate to serve the needs of our members and to promote excellence in the specialized field of labour and employment law, we are pleased to introduce the Future Leaders Conference, created for CACE members 10 years at the bar or less,  The inaugural conference will be in Montreal, Quebec from May 6-7, 2017.  The positive response and commitment from member firms across the country has been outstanding and we anticipate having over 70 attendees!

The formal part of the conference will run from Saturday noon to just after Sunday noon to allow for minimal disruption from normal work acitivites. Further details and registration information can be found on our website.  Registration was released in mid-March to firms that previously committed members to attend and is now open to all members until we reach our maximum capacity of 90 attendees. Please note that registration for the conference will close on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 1:00 pm PST.
